Day 25 | GOD HEARS AND RESPONDS TO OUR PRAYERS

NUMBERS 14:1-39

Key Verse: 19

Pardon the iniquity of this people, I pray, according to the greatness of Your mercy, just as You have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.

After God delivered the children of Israel out of Egypt and into the wilderness on the way to the Promised Land, they began to complain against God and long for the fleshpots of Egypt. The depth of this insult, after having prayed to God to deliver them from Egypt, was so great that God’s righteous indignation was kindled so that he declared that he would destroy them and detailed how he would go about doing so. Yet Moses interceded on behalf of the people, and begged God for mercy on behalf of a people who deserved none. And amazingly, God altered His plans, sentencing those of Moses’ generation to die in the wilderness over a 40-year period, and only allowing Joshua and Caleb to enter into the Promised Land with the next generation.

So powerful is intercessory prayer that it can literally change the mind of God. This of course is so awesome a claim that our minds almost reject it instantly. How can a God who is sovereign be influenced by a mere mortal? This is not a difficult concept for any parent to understand. Raising children is a series of harsh stands and hasty retreats. My wife and I decided that we needed to keep our daughter from sneaking into our bed in the middle of the night. Yet each night she somehow ends up there. It’s easy to say that we’re both too tired to put her back in her bed, but the truth is that our harsh stand melts into a hasty retreat in the face of our daughter, with her arms outstretched, asking to be picked up so that she can be near us. Our ceaseless love for her overrides our stand, even though it is right, with a mercy that draws her closer to us. This is not a challenge to our authority but a demonstration of it. If God cannot change His mind, it would be a limitation on God’s sovereignty. The fact that God’s love for us can override His requirement for judgment is a demonstration of His endless and unequalled love for us.

We must pray to God with an unrelenting posture to push past the perceived no’s in order to get to the heart of the yes’s that God wants us to have. God longs for us to have so much confidence in Him, love for Him, and boldness with Him, that He is able to reverse Himself and draw us ever closer.
